Since the early 1990s, the prevalent tradition of singing
"Old Nassau" has been threatened
with extinction because its has no longer been taught as
part of new student activities. Despite the fact that the song
is still sung at the conclusion of many, many campus events, including
football and basketball games, Triangle Shows, Commencement, and
alumni and class events, for more than a decade now, it is no longer part of the introductory
activities for first year students. Efforts are underway to rectify this egregious assault on Princeton tradition and insure that the Class of 2007 might actually enjoy a similar introduction to Alma Mater as part of their Frosh Week activities. Stay tuned.
For many years, all members of the newly entering
class gathered together only once, for the required Honors Assembly.
At this-- the one mandatory program of their Princeton careers--
they are welcomed into the University by the President and representatives
from the Board of Trustees, the Honor Committee, and the Director
of Admissions. In the past, at the conclusion of this program, the
students were also introduced to the song, "Old
Nassau", and given simple instruction on its
singing, lasting less than three minutes, in toto. However,
for reasons that cannot be explained to the satisfaction of many,
this brief amount of time is no longer made available for this purpose.
It is the hope of the Princetoniana Committee that this oversight
will shortly become a thing of the past.
